Trotha gave not quarter, held no quarter, he waged a war of
extermination. It was not until the Germans living in
settlement negotiated with Trotha to stop killing everyone,
women, children,  and everything, all cattle, because they
had a shortage of labor and Trotha was wiping out the
"property" that a deal was struck, some prisoners would be
granted life and labor, but they could not be paid for it.
Still, Trotha was determined (in V. page 254 to be as Jesus
returning to earth, to deliver) to kill them all.
