No quarter asked, no quarter given. But, hey, I'm not
only well aware of the problemnatics (to say the
least) of Roman Catholicism (which has suffered its
own persecution at times, places, as I've been
reminded), Christianity, Christianities, Religion,
religions, Spirituality, spiritualities, what have you
...
I also have a sense of humor about it, when and where
appropriate ...

Me, I'm a Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini man myself, and
not just because his name is "Cardinal Martini," see
also Umberto Eco and Carlo Maria Martini, Belief or
Nonbelife? A Confrontation (New York: Arcade, 1999).
But there's a certain Catholic irony, I think, perhaps
along the lines of that long line of Jewish humor
(perhaps most recently manifested, mutated in the
[strangely de-Judaicized] "Seinfeld"?). A lot of
realize the wackiness (I mean, seriously, how many of
you Catholics, ex- or otherwise, went hunting
immediately for the most gruesome martyrdoms in "The
Lives of the Saints"? And this must be esp. obvious
in that strange confluence of Catholicism and Vodun et
al. in New Orleans--why do you think it's the Gothic
capital [Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite] of the U.S.?), but
...
But I'm also fascinated with the topic of what I call
Catholic Modernist Architecture. Those of you who've
been in a church built since the 50's (in the US, at
least, perhaps France?) know what I mean. If anyone
knows of any literature thereupon, any references or
other clues would be much appreciated. Okay, now, if
I can get to it, Thomas Pynchon, V. ....
