Many insights in a fine analysis.
2 responses. What once was provided by the God-idea is now provided by
the "heroes" of the power bureaucracy (if I may paraphrase and expand on
your statement), the quest for revelatory symbols by technological
progress, new covenants by new chemicals. Pynchon shows the relationship
of modern myths to the ancient ones, yet there are angels. It is not
that the modern dispensation is one of death as opposed to the old
life-seeking religion or whatever, because the angels are symbols of
white death. They link the rocket-bomb and how Slothrop's New England
religionists saw God: the hand of death . . .
What I quoted above from your posts is important to my understanding of
Gravity's Rainbow. If the Elect that run our lives seek death, submit to
its bony hand, agree to be its agents in return for material enrichment,
then all that the rest of us can wish for is preterition. Salvation in
this dispensation is death. Preterition is a turning away from such
salvation ("I would prefer not to," in the slothly words of Bartleby,
the Scrivener).
Yours,
Eric R
