I think that the chess piece reference there is meant to resonate with von
Goll's nickname -- der Springer -- as well.

It's interesting that the actual organisational structure of the 175s'
commune is modelled on the "hierarchy" of *prisoners* at Dora: a camp
(Lager) made up of separate blocks (Blockältester), group supervisors
(Kapo), foremen (Vorarbeiter), room supervisors (Stubendienst), and the
messengers (Läufer). They haven't actually allocated any of their fellow
175s the roles of Nazi guards at all: it's "a hypothetical SS chain of
command -- no longer restricted to what Destiny allotted then for jailers"
(665.2 up), which serves as the putative, or 'divine', authority here.
