"I'ze a great believer in peaceful solutions. Ain't no one as peaceful
as a dead trouble-maker."
- Keith Laumer, _Retief's Ransom_
This is kind of a high-brow list, but if anyone likes cheap, low-brow,
slapstick humour, I commend to you some of the old "sci-fi" novels and
stories of Keith Laumer. Many of them revolved around the character of
intergallactic diplomat (junior-grade) Jamie Retief, and were a
send-up of the US/USSR war-by-proxy-states transposed in space and
time and featuring absurd plot lines and <Pynchon tie-in>
pie-in-the-face </Pynchon tie-in> gags.
