Was fortunate enough to see Guy Maddin's (Tales of
Gimli Hospital, Careful) deceptively short film, "The
Heart of the World," on the big screen this past week.
The finest six minutes Sergei Eisenstein never shot.
Saw another brilliant short of his called "Odilon
Redon" a few years back, taking off (no puns where
none intended ...) from ...

I believe it was part of a series of films where
various directors brought to life (or, at any rate, to
the silver screen) various works of art. He actually
showed up for the screening of his Twilight of the Ice
Nymphs (which stars the compellingly creepy Alice
Krige, features of all people Frank Gorshin, and takes
up of all things certain aspects of Knut Hamsun's
Pan), but I'd recommend above all else his Archangel.
Another one I was lucky to see on the big screen. Not
officially on video in the U.S., but ...

... for example. I can imagine stumbling into this
and not realizing at first that it wasn't made 70-80
years ago. The This is Spinal Tap of interwar Soviet
cinema. Lots of interesting stuff coming out of
Canada of late, see also Don McKellar's inventively
and touchingly apocalyptic Last Night ...
