The Man

It was like a public confession. In a talk titled "Working for the
Man," Mr. Williams, a professor of English at the University of
Missouri, castigated the Norton anthologies and canons in general.
"Nortons represent the Man," he said. They "are inferior goods and
failed enterprises, representing received opinion, simplifying
complicated views, marshaling an individualistic hall of fame,
usually of great men in a fraternity."
