How to make enemies and influence friends
By Akiva Eldar

The Israeli Embassy in Washington makes a practice of sending to Jerusalem
press clippings of articles by Palestinians in the American press. Some diplomat
with a talent for adapting has given the press clippings a new title: "Know the
enemy."

Thus, Daoud Kutab, one of the most moderate of Palestinian journalists, wins
the title of enemy because of an article in the Los Angeles Times. The Israeli
diplomat didn't make this up.

What should the envoy understand about what's going on at home? From the attack
on Muhamad Dahlan's car? The humiliations of Saeb Erakat at checkpoints? The
hassling of Abu Mazen at the border? The shooting gallery the IDF made out of
the National Security troops at Bitounya?

The shelling of Jibril Rajoub's house removes any remaining doubts. Ariel
Sharon has decided to turn the Palestinian Authority into the enemy.

> "Mine is one in a series of attacks in the last three weeks," Mr. Rajoub said
in his gravelly voice, speaking at the ultra-modern preventive security
headquarters where he sometimes drives his Mercedes right into the lobby and
parks. "I think it's part of a policy to undermine the Palestinian Authority
and make it collapse."

> Some Israelis viewed the incident similarly. Akiva Eldar, a senior columnist
for the newspaper Haaretz, said: "The shelling of Jibril Rajoub's house removes
any remaining doubts. Ariel Sharon has decided to turn the Palestinian
Authority into the enemy."
