No, I wouldn't say that she fooled McClintic, but it seems that that is one
of the possibilities for what Roony is thinking.  I am pretty sure she
didn't use cork.  In the first chapter, section I., there are a couple
descriptions of Paola.  She is described as knowing bits of many languages
for instance.  I think she just knows how to fit in.
