This complements a picture of a kaiser's court, which combined macho
militarism with all manner of sexual deviance, as recently revealed in The
Kaiser and His Court by John Rohl, the distinguished historian. It is hard
to forget one of Wilhelm's courtiers proposing to one of his best friends a
bottom-shaving poodle game that they knew would amuse the kaiser: "You must
be paraded by me as a circus poodle! Just think: behind shaved tight, in
front long bangs of wool, at the back under a genuine poodle tail a marked
opening . . . It is simply splendid . . . I can already see His Majesty
laughing with us." Another senior courtier, Count Dietrich von Hulsen,
famously died of a heart attack while dancing in a tutu and feather hat for
the kaiser.
