Pauline Kael once said that when Hollywood films no longer satisfied her and
her movie crazy college friends they turned to La Grande Illusion and Le
Jour se Leve. I can see why. They were perfect. Don't know if I've seen them
since the 50s but
still remember a number of scenes especially in Illusion.
Jean Gabin was the quintessential working man.
