So who are you half in love with me? You're very sweet. Terrance was
right--I do love the attention.
Why do I like Doug so much....I don't know. I liked him from the start.
Just a feeling, like the feeling I get from a lot of people around here. But
Doug has a lot to say, and he says it exceptionally well. I think it has
less to do with politics and more to do with language and the fine way in
which he uses it. I haven't heard anyone around here put up a better
argument in the two or three months I've been here. Except for me of course
: ) on the nature of the Economy, but he backed away polite as could be.
I also like him because of the way he interprets Pynchon. A couple of his
recent posts on Gravity's Rainbow were terrific. The man knows how to write
and he knows how to READ. How could I not like him. Yes, he's a prick
sometimes, but it's part of his charm. And I admire his tenacity and his
energy in fighting off the goons. Those boys need a kick in the ass
sometimes. All of us do, but they do especially.
So you think they have their place, do you? And you think we should quit
with this conflict.? Why? How would it save the list (whatever that means)?
Convince me. I'm kind of thinking the conflict drives our thoughts. It's
not the most healthy form of intellectual stimulation, I'm sure, but
sometimes it's their idiotic views that help me solidify my own. If it's
just Doug all the time sweetly reiterating what's already inside my mind,
I'm not sure I'd be as thoughtful as I am. And what would Malign say without
Doug to kick at. And Terrance, look at the poems we inspire in him! Even
David, you heard him today, wishing he'd read M&D he's so bored. Yes, we get
a little out of hand sometimes, but I'm not convinced we'd be helping this
list in eliminating the little conflicts. But I'm certainly open to your
thoughts.
As for defending the underdog, yes, I suppose there was some of that in
defending Doug initially. Not that I thought he needed it, but because I
thought he might decide he was in the wrong place and leave. Nobody else
was giving him encouragement (at the time). I wanted him to know there was
at least one other person out there who agreed with him. Then once I saw
the effect it had, it just became fun.
Yes, I am American. Californian.

still
write better than the whole lot of them (the stone-throwers lot, that is).
But I did notice one little thing in that Slothrop post that is rather
telling--Slothrop signed his name 'doug'; that's Doug with a lower-case D.
I've never seen the real Doug Millison do that before. And if he's at all
like me, I doubt he ever would. I've never seen him end a post in 'best'
either.
But who cares."
Barbara! Are you American? You sound like it. You are a credit to your
nation and your sex. I envy your erudition. I am half in love with you.
Alas, I am pledged to celibacy. But I digress. Why do you like Doug so
much? Is is only politics? Or do you defend the underdog? An trait most
admirable in the Yankees. ( a trait I must say, saved our asses from Hitler
). But that is (as you yanks so bluntly put it) history.
I think it must be the politics. You and Doug must stop this protracted
conflict against the goons. They have their place. I have set myself up as
the mediator. I will be glad to mediate to "save the List" (as they so
direfully imply). Oh yes, I know all. I am
the fool
