Thanks, my oversight. Lomax had already been introduced, and the framing
scene simply carries across the chapter divide, as someone had pointed out.
I'd also be interested to find out why "Philadelphia Soap" is a "Byword ...
of low Quality" (47.19), and whether there's anything beyond the literal
explanation of that reference.
