Pynchon must have known that the God-hungry 60s generation would not be
denied its hope for Redemption. But did he see in his wildest imagination
the kind of bible thumping his big book could engender? And right here on
the p-list?
Well, as a matter of fact he probably did but wrote Gravity's Rainbow the
way he wanted it, ambiguity galore and devil take the hindmost. Besides,
increase sales to whatever readership would be welcome..Did Jonathan Franzen
refuse Oprah Book Club sponsorship? He probably thought about is a few
minutes.
To my mind P is plenty pointed in his skepticism about Spirituality (drug
and otherwise induced) and to just about everything else..
