First Prehistoric Creature Became a Symbol of

Can't conjue up the NYU Press listing, but my favorite
bit is how the extinction of the mastodon was taken by
armchair paleontologists Thomas Jefferson, Charles
Willson Peale, et al., as a sign of Divine
Intervention on behalf of what would become known as
Manifest Destiny, God having cleared the continent of
the beasts in order to make way for the White Man ...
