And Dick & Jane, but N.O.Brown seems to me a very direct source of Pynchon's 
iconography/mythology, if only because he distills so much of all cultural 
metaphors.  But, yes, Pynchon can be readily read without a source-book.  He 
creates puzzles with internal clues.
