1. Pynchon again revels in an anti-lawyer set-piece. (146.6-17)
2. "And there. In the Shadows, all but painted over,-- " (150.9)
What is this unnamed, barely visible object in the painting of the "mounted
settler at dusk, somewhere out in Hottentot land"?
3. What is the reference to "Quebec" as a "Zero-Point of History" at 152.23?
4. Wicks seems to have been reading from his journals all along, adding and
omitting details at will, judging by the parenthesis (a comment by an
external narrator) at 153.10.
5. Bonk's prevarications over which gun to use reminds me of Frans van der
Groov in _GR_ (108-11), as well as Pirate (107).
6. The Vroom clock stands sentinel in the passageway between "the two
Worlds" of the house, that of the family and that of the slaves. (155.26)
7. Greet warns Jere: "They think Charles and you've something to do with the
Longitude". (155.34) Sounds a bit like the Cold War race to get the first
man into space.
8. "Dixon's connection with Christopher Le Maire", Jesuit Priest (156.34) ?
The "Dutch Le Maires, ... Jacob ... and Isaac ... " (157) ?
