Grief Voice as Hope

I don't understand this clumsy, inapt metaphor. 

And I don't participate in public display of patriotism myself, but don't 
feel cynical toward those who do (for the most part) or question the feelings 
behind the display, particularly when offered up as smug sanctimony from 
someone who believes sitting in a church pew grants him the high ground.
