Two upcoming FAIR events in New York City:

FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting) presents:

"A War on Terror?
Media miss full story on civilians & civil liberties,"

a talk by Laura Flanders, journalist, & Michael Ratner, human rights lawyer.

Thursday, November 29, 6:30 PM
Housing Works Used Book Café
126 Crosby St (between Prince and Houston), New York
Free and Open to the Public

U.S. media have adopted the "War on Terror" as a catchphrase to describe
U.S. military action against Afghanistan and new domestic security measures.
But with mounting civilian casualties and millions facing starvation in
Afghanistan, media should be asking whether terrorists are really the main
victims of this war. Instead, CNN recently set the tone by declaring it
would be "perverse" to focus on civilian suffering. And within the U.S., new
"anti-terror" laws have passed with minimal investigation into the rollback
of civil rights they mandate. Please join FAIR as we try to fill in some of
the gaps left by media coverage of the current crisis.

Journalist Laura Flanders hosts "Working Assets Radio," a daily show on San
Francisco's KALW. Formerly, she directed FAIR's Women's Desk. She is author
of Real Majority, Media Minority: The Cost of Sidelining Women in Reporting.

Michael Ratner, a lawyer with the Center for Constitutional Rights,
specializes in human rights law. He has devoted his career to opposing U.S.
military interventions abroad and to defending dissident voices at home.

FAIR, Physicians for a National Health Program, Metro New York Health Care
for All Campaign and the Public Health Association of New York City present:

"Health Care and the Media,"

a forum with

Katherine Eban Finkelstein, Metro Reporter for The New York Times;
Janine Jackson, Program Director, FAIR;
& Amy Goodman, co-host of Democracy Now!

Tuesday, November 27, 7:30 PM
Beth Israel Medical Center, Phillips Ambulatory Care Center
10 Union Square East (between 14th & 15th Streets), 2nd Floor Lecture Hall
Free & Open to the Public

The United States stands out among wealthy, industrialized countries for its
failure to provide universal health care. The November 27th forum will
examine what role, if any, the media has played in the evolution of this
situation. Katherine Finkelstein of The New York Times will talk about how
the attacks of 9/11 may shift the debate and dialogue over health coverage,
which some people say should now be viewed as part of national security.
Janine Jackson of FAIR will review how the media have handled initiatives
for universal health insurance in the United States, how other countries'
experiences are portrayed, and the current picture of health care options
presented in our nation's news media. Independent radio journalist Amy
Goodman will focus on the issue of public health: Goodman argues that until
the 2001 bioterrorism crisis, the mainstream media paid little or no
attention to the fact that our country's public health infrastructure was
increasingly underfunded. She contends that this is because public health
was viewed as a service for the poor, and therefore of little interest.
