Hi all--
this excerpt from one of the great HPL's letters, in which he discusses his
characters reminds me what could conceivably be directed at Pynchon's early
work (most notably in V. "Entropy", and 49, IMHO):
"Individuals and their fortunes within natural law move me very little.
They are all momentary trifles bound from a common nothingness toward
another common nothingness. Only the cosmic framework itself--or such
individuals as symbolize principles (or defiances of principles) of the
cosmic framework--can gain a deep grip on my imagination and set it to work
creating. In other words, the only "heroes" I can write about are
phenomena."
M&D and Vineland (for the most part), I believe is a departure from the
above and earlier work. Pynchon definitely changed somehow in those 17 yrs
b/w 73 and 90.
