Doug,
what Dostum says as an explanation for the lack of security doesn't sound
that bad. It looks more like a "Kriegslist" of the foreign Taliban-fighters
than a murder committed by the NA and US-troops. The reporter from one of
our main tv-stations who reported the incident has been inside of the
fortress when the fighting broke out. The NA-soldiers really were surprised,
and the fighting went on for three days. For me it's evidence enough not to
worry too much about those guys.
And contrary to Mr. Carroll ("The more this war is deemed ''just,'' the more
it seems wrong", or in the case of German commentaries, Rudolf Augstein) I
agree more with Mr. Kelly that we've learned quite a few things since 9/11
that would justify the war against the Taliban even without the attacks, as
he puts it: "Destroying Afghanistan's occupiers did not mean killing
innocent Afghans but freeing them from fascist oppression."
