"savaging of America by sections of the Left"

Simple question: who, among the people I've quoted,
has sought to "excuse the atrocity"? None, they have
all condemned it. You fail, once again, to come to
grips with my criticism of Rushdie's piece. I'm
offended by his incorrrect statement that the people
he disagrees with "excuse the atrocity" -- this claim
is demonstrablty false. To the contrary, everybody
condemns the atrocity, even as they disagree on how to
respond and why it happened.

Calling for peace, nonviolence, compassion, and
understanding is not restricted to any particular
place on the political spectrum. It's far from clear
who you -- or Rushdie -- mean by "sections of the
Left." It's also far from clear what you think we gain
by suppressing dissent and criticism of the policies
that our leaders are shaping and implementing -- how
that fits in with a free press and the dynamics of
representative democracy, I'll leave for you to
explain, Terrance. Why, exactly, should we just shut
up and let Bush and his cronies do as they wish?

If you wish to ignore the U.S. role in creating Bin
Laden, fine, but don't expect thinking people who can
read history to agree with you. Even the corporate
media can't deny this.

If you choose to support whatever the Bush
Administration wants to do, without understanding the
details of the situation and its international
context, go right ahead. But don't wish that kind of
willful ignorance on the rest of us, don't expect
others to go along with you and turn their brains off,
too.

-Doug
