Or, you might say instead, "All they did was try to
understand the attacks from another point of view." 

I expect that if U.S. bombs start falling in
Afghanistan, there will even be people in that
country, explaining why it is that the victims and
survivors have to suffer and die.  I expect that some
of the Afghan victims may have a hard time listening
to those explanations, and that the victims might
point a finger at  those who are trying to explain why
the violence is taking place and accuse them of
excusing the attacks or justifying them.  No, the
explainer might say, I'm just trying to make you
understand how it is that you pissed off the Americans
to the point where they now strike back, I don't
condone the attacks, or excuse them, or justify them,
I'm only trying to help you understand why they're
happening.
