The Battle of Quiberon Bay Admiral Sir Edward
Hawke
The Royal George, off Penris Point, 24
November 1759
" In my letter of the 17th by express, I desired you would
acquaint their
Lordships with my having received intelligence of eighteen sail
of the
line, and three frigates of the Brest squadron being discovered
about
twenty-four leagues to the north-west of Belleisle, steering to
the
eastward."
Hawke, a brave and brilliant Captain was a romanticized and popularized
myth even while he lived.
But here is an example from Treasure Island,
"If he were Admiral Hawke he shall pay his score," cried Silver; and
then,
relinquishing my hand--"Who did you say he was?" he asked. "Black what?"

>From one of his letters,
"Our loss by the enemy is not considerable. For in the ships which are
now with me, I find only one lieutenant and fifty seamen and marines
killed, and about two hundred and twenty wounded."

Note that in the letter, Treasure Island, the common sailors, and
marines are not given much respect.
The Herschel Family
Isaac was a musician in the Hanovarian Foot Guards and who rose to
become Bandmaster. Although a man with no formal education, he tried
hard to give his four sons and two daughters a good education. His
interests in music, philosophy and astronomy often led to some spirited
conversations in their home.

The soprano and bass, or outer voices, define the chorale texture. The
inner voices
(alto and tenor), serve a supporting role. We must control the relation
between the
outer voices (see "Simultaneous Motion," below) precisely. Soprano and
bass must
not only be strong in themselves, but the relationship between them must
be strong
as well.

The Duke of Bedford
http://www.contemplator.com/folk/bedford.html
John Russell, 4th duke of Bedford, 1710-71, was
one of the politicians who attacked Robert Walpole and served in the
cabinets
of Henry Pelham, duke of Newcastle, Lord Bute, and George Grenville. He
was the leader of a faction of Whig politicians, known as the Bedford
group,
which had considerable electoral power.

Metamorphosis:
A transformation, as by magic or sorcery. 2. A marked change in
appearance, character, condition, or function. 3. Biology. A change in
the form and often habits of an animal during normal development after
the embryonic stage. Metamorphosis includes, in insects, the
transformation of a maggot into an adult fly and a caterpillar into a
butterfly and, in amphibians, the changing of a tadpole into a frog. 4.
Pathology. A usually degenerative change in the structure of a
particular body tissue. (AHD)
