Grant's meeting the Admiralty Fopling can be compared and contrasted
with Captain Smith's meeting young Blinky. In fact, Grant seems to be
Smith's double, the scene (thinking of that Foucault essay on Nietzshce
and Genealogy) an Interdiction palimpsest of sorts. And Pynchon seems to
be up to his old doubles again.

 Grant/Smith (Captains) Blinky/Fifer (wapping boys) Fopling/Blinky
Grant/Fopling

The young smirking Admiralty Fopling doesn't say, as Blinky does, you've
a good job don't fuck up, but only, here are your orders you common
swab. The Captain has something on his mind, he want's to talk it off,
but the smug lad only stands on the gig and offers flip replies. He
doesn't went to hear the Captain's story, he notes his divided
Loyalties. The Captain says the boy is sending him on a fools errand.
The youth only tells him to keep his chin up. The Captain, now incensed,
thinks to smash the brat, but decides to frighten the little punk by
pretending to be mad and brandishing his weapon. He recognizes in the
lad his double, the malapert youth right down to the attire.
