As a general impression, it seems to me that Pynchon's work rather
systematically questions the values of consumer culture and, more
generally, markets. There's an emphasis on the arbitrariness and phoniness
of consumer culture, and his work comes back again and again to a focus on
the way that relationships with things get in the way of or substitute for
relationships among people.
