Sorry, Thomas, that would only be the case if you saw the world in terms of
absolute binaries (he's not anti-fascist, so he must be fascist!!).  This
doesn't follow, and I doubt Doug meant it that way.  Pynchon definitely
(IMO) stakes out anti-fascist political ground in his novels, although in
Vineland the phenomenon of fascism is pulled out of history and used as a
metaphor.  These political positions inform or are relevant to current
"left" debate, is all.  But since Pynchon doesn't even describe Frenesi as a
fascist in Vineland (and her mother and daughter both have "desires"), I
think it is reasonable to believe that it takes quite positive fascist
action to earn the title from P; not even having been manipulated will do
it.  Not that I'm suggesting that jbor or Terrence have been manipulated by
fascists, although it would be possible to make what I wrote mean that too.
So
your reading of a cliche (side of the fence) would have to be considerably
overdetermined to support the accusation you make.
