The "modern Left" seems to be your obsession. I don't know the situation in 
the US, but here in Europe I know roundabout 15 versions of "leftism". What 
do you mean? The left liberals? The anarchists? The "whatever 
happened"-communists? The marxists? The bakuninists? The anti-globalization 
left? The Greens? The pacifists? The ecologists? Union people? Social 
democrats? Socialists? Cyberfreaks, special sorts of geeks and nerds? 
Cracker? Hacker? The solidarity-with-whatever-people?
The "black block"?

Here are f. e. the so called "Anti-German communists" who think that the rest 
of the leftists are antisemits. They have slogans like "For Israel and 
communism", for the Jewish communities very embarrassing. 

No, my friend, I  don't know any longer what "leftists" are looking like. 
It's your obsession not reality.
