They think they can scare the hell out us but they
have forgotten one thing.

W e  h a v e  a l w a y s  w a t c h e d  o u t.

Watched out, been alert, differentiated. 

Differentiated from the outside world to a proper
extent, and, what is more, wisely differentiated
within. Everybody knowing where one belongs to.

Reserved the most viable of our downtowns, oh yes, for
Commerce. (Some fools say Pynchon does not appreciate
this. But it is really quite evident that the real
hero of _GR_ is not the commerce-evasive, un-American
Slothrop, but von Goell – American inside.)

Europeans: keep talking of your "atmosphere" and "city
culture" and whatever as much as you want. 

But never come saying we did not warn you.
