convicted criminals - murderers, even - who escaped from the Maze and
in 1998 convinced a California court that their crimes were politically
motivated, and did not justify extradition to the UK ("America's staunchest
ally").

Following the Good Friday agreement, Britain dropped its pursuit of the
case while these fine chaps were free on bail pending their applications to
stay in the US.  Dunno where they are now.  On your street, maybe.
