Sometimes in the songs (cf. pp. 12, 305). The scene directions in the Basil
Rathbone/S.Z. Sakall "script" are round, however. (534)

The dates are interesting -- "two station marks, yellow crayon through the
years of grease and passage, 1966 and 1971, I tasted my first blood." (739)
After Malcolm X's assassination in 1965 there was an escalation in Civil
Rights violence in the U.S., which would be my best guess as to the 'blood
of our enemies we drank, blood of our friends we cherished' confession. Not
much biographical info on Pynchon c. 1966-1971 though.
