Dave writes,

I am not exactly sure I understand what you are saying, but I will
try to answer you, even if I end up going out on a limb here. In the
wide spectrum of sexuality and power, I have always thought there is
a certain zone of strangely perverse human behavior that blends
repressed homosexuality, worship of power, self-loathing, and a
certain sadism. The Brownshirts are one example of this, others may
be drawn from the fringes of the S&M community, nautical and prison
situations, and even from Pynchon's fictional Blicero. I have no idea
on what currents of psychology create this; nor do I think it is any
worse or more "unnatural" than any other form of brutality or sadism
-- indeed, most serial killers are straight white males with a
perverse fixation of sexual domination and displacement of the erotic
drive, and so on.

I am sorry if I was unthinkingly using the word perverse, and if that
implied that there was anything at all perverse about homosexuality.
I agree, there are many manifestations of perversion in humanity; and
many of these are flavored by sexual vectors.

I do think there is a lot of controversy and danger in depicting "bad
guys" with sexual stereotyping. There's a weird dynamic in Hollywood,
for examples -- for a while, effeminate villains were "in," and now,
all cinematic gays have to be good guys, friendly and
non-threatening. I hope one day, people can just be what they are,
without fuss.

And please, before anyone flames me as a homophobe or bigot or
anything, I was one of the people who posted positive things about
"safe" S&M during the last GRGR. I think the entire spectrum of human
sexuality is fascinating, fun, and a good place to start on a
Saturday night.

Oh boy, I hope I am not in trouble....
