I don't read this as simple blasphemy. Certainly in one sense his
mocking the Host reminds us of Buck Mulligan at the opening of Joyce's
Ulysses--a blasphemous parody of the Roman Catholic
sacrifice/sacrament/rite. I read this as an offering. And Easter one.
It's heretical surely and blasphemous to Mason. However, if Mason were
to take the Rev.d's Mango and eat it he might discover something. He
might be able to reconcile with his father. But the poor man is too
restless. He needs a good five hours of silence at a Quaker meeting
house. But as Dixon will find out, when he tries to offer Mason a
comforting silence, Mason can't sit still. And he's looking for Love in
all the wrong places.
"Blessed sister, holy mother, spirit of the fountain, spirit of the
garden,
Suffer us not to mock ourselves with falsehood
Teach us to care and not to care
Teach us to sit still"
--T.S. Eliot, Ash Wednesday
"Hieronymo's mad againe.
Datta."
