Also, in GR, p.200, Slothrop, chasing somebody who has stolen his clothes, falls from a tree. "Seems he's, unnhh, wrenched his back a little, but doesn't much feel like moving anyhow." And a whole dialogue ensues, while Slothrop remains lying on the grass. John is right: This whole falling-and-just-lying-there business is definitely an idea picked up from cartoons. It always reminds me of Wile E. Coyote in his ever failing attempts to catch the Road Runner.
