UN Official Hints At War Crimes Trial For Taliban-Kyodo
Oct 25, 2001 2:44PM [Dow Jones OnLine News]

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- A senior U.N. human rights official in Islamabad on
Thursday accused Taliban leaders of gross violations of human rights and
said those found to have committed massacres in Afghanistan would be held
accountable by the international community, Kyodo news agency reported.

"Any one responsible for breach of international law will have to be
accountable," Kamal Hussain, former Bangladesh foreign minister who
currently serves as special U.N. rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan,
told a press conference, Kyodo said.

Hussain said the Taliban have grossly violated human rights and committed
"massacres" and Taliban leaders will be held accountable if they commit
gross human rights abuses against their political rivals and the Afghan
people before they fall from power, Kyodo said.

Since the Taliban came to power in 1996, the U.N. Human Right Commission has
documented at least six large-scale massacres of rivals by the Taliban,
targeted mainly because of their ethnic or religious background, the agency
said.
