I'm not overlooking the iteresting points you are making, Michel. I just wanted to comment on this minor one. The Greeks couldn't believe one would "fall off the world" past what we now know as Gibraltar, because they knew the world was not flat, but a globe. They new that before the 4th century B.C. And quite possibly they weren't the only ones. I recently read (sorry, can't remember where) that the Chinese also arrived at the same conclusion at least as early as 300 B.C.
