Charles Clerk, author of Mason & Dixon & Pynchon, digs deep into the
junk yard and grave yard and the yard or so (not much more that a yard
of books on Mr. Dixon and Mr. Mason in print) of books and documents
available  and doesn't come up with anything for Nessel. He seems to be
a fictional character. 

He seems to be compared/contrasted with the "Creation's Dark Engineer 
...Mortality (97), so I was very interested in him. Thanks for digging.
