Okay, I see that, having dug out a properly-paginated
(anyone notice that that recent coppery-covered
Penguin "20th Century Masterpieces" or whatever ed.,
which I picked up, well, just to have, I guess,
DOESN'T retain the original pagination? Maddening
...) copy of Gravity's Rainbow, James and, just now,
Cyrus covered everything here, and far better than I
was about to, so ...

So, not that I want to instigate yet another
digression into GR, but ... but an observation and a
question. First off, Marcel = T.S. Eliot? "[F]unny
haircut with the ears perfectly outlined in hair that
starts abruptly a quarter-inch of bare plastic skin
away, black patent-shiny hair, hornrim glasses, a
rather remote manner," "long discourse," "his
exquisite 19th-century brainwork--the human art it
took to build which has been flat lost, lost as the
dodo bird" (GR, Pt. IV, p. 675) ...

And would the other "sure-fire calibration
test"--another question: what exactly is being
calibrated here? Jeremy's responses to ...? In terms
of ...?--here be those "dreams: about a gambling debt"
(GR, Pt. IV, p. 708)? Hm .... Roger and Seaman
Bodine, "Titans and Fathers," "Yes, giant rubber cocks
are here to stay as part of the arsenal ..." (ibid.)
... okay, okay, the WTC, Osama bin Laden, the Taliban,
er, sorry, Thomas Pynchon, Mason & Dixon ...
