Doug,
basically I do agree with your politics if not necessarily your interpretation of
Pynchon. But what most people here, including myself, object to is your tone. Of
course, you have never posted something like "I am the only one capable of
mourning the dead" but to my ears you definitely sound like you were the only one
who knows exactly what is "the right thing to do" (which is, by the way, just
what George Bush Jr. keeps telling the world). This is why MalignD characterized
your personal statement about the confusion you said you were feeling in the
Sixties as being unusually honest and useful. MalignD, Terrance and the Great
Quail have expressed their diverse views on the subjects, but they have openly
admitted that they also have their doubts about the going-ons and they have shown
that any opposing view is welcome if it does adhere to certain unspoken standards
of intellectual honesty. I have my doubts about my own POV as well, and this is
why I feel much closer to the Quail or MalignD, even though I do not share their
political stance.
