Col49 - on the number of 49

Aim knot sure;
      A seemingly credible, Pynchon conversant, otherwise total stranger, at 
an otherwise unrelated semi-public assembly, had noted a clandestine 
reference to "Lot 49".  I cannot independently verify this, but he left me 
with the impression that "Lot 49" was the lot number of the experimental 
trial synthesis that  was LSD.  Hate to offer muted post-horns another 
opportunity to pontificate over the influential role of LSD/CIA/ETC in COL49, 
but aim quiet sure that the selection of the number 49 is not arbitrary, 
coincidental, much less accidental.
