I have to agree with the Divine Malign re Stone. The
gritty underside of the hippie movement (the way it
slides rather seamlessly into the Establishment it
ostensibly opposes) he portrays in Dog Soldiers isn't
all that different from Pynchon's take (in COL49 or
GR). One of my favorite lines is, "In a world where
men in helicopters are shooting elephants, people are
just naturally going to want to get high" or words to
that effect. The movie wasn't as good as the novel,
in my book at least, but it was almost worth it to see
the look on Nick Nolte's face when his reading
preference was put down -- "Still reading Nietszche,
how piquant" or something like that. A Flag for
Sunrise is good, too.

Has anybody read Stone's recent novel, Damascus Gate?
