I don't know the book he references, but an offlist
friend (not a Pynchon reader) sent me this today:

"Did you know that James Jesus Angleton, head of CIA
counter-intelligence and one of the most legendary
conspirators in Watergate, was also a personal friend
of T. S. Eliot?  I learned this from the book, The
Cultural Cold War.  The CIA made a serious effort of
promoting Eliot's form of poetics."
