"'I was about to do the Buddhist monk thing,'
explained the executive." (Lot 49, Ch. 5, p. 115)

Was recently reminded (putting together a Nouvelle
Vague film fest for some friends, so if anyone has any
favorites ...) that, near the end of Jean-Luc Godard's
Masculin/Feminin (1966, loosely based on a couple of
Guy de Mauppassant stories, I believe, they come with
the Grive ed. screenplay), a guy (Yves Alfonso) walks
by Jean-Pierre Leaud and Marlene Jobert on the street
and asks for a (Paris? sorry ...) match. Next thing
you know, he's doing the Buddhist monk thing himself,
in protest of the Vietnam War ...

Yves Alfonso also played Tom Thumb handing stones to
Emily Bronte (Blandine Jeanson) in JLG's Weekend
(1967), nice discussion of that bit in ...

Silverman, Kaja and Harun Farocki.
Speaking about Godard. NY: NYU Press, 1998.

Anyway, M/F co-stars pop chanteuse Chantal Goya ...

... so note not only the Francoise Hardy and Brigitte
Bardot cameos, but the Sylvie Vartan posters as well.
Yeh yeh yeh yeh yeh ...
