I wonder about Franzen--Ok, he knew alot about St. Louis in the 27th City
and yet the plot regarding the Indian police chief was so damned impausible
that it unbalanced all the small insights he made about that sad city.

Strong Motion was very labored.

I also wonder about all the Pynchon/Gaddis connections--cause his books are
long-ish?--what shite. I've read a few excerpts from The Corrections and god
knows what all the fuss is about. Seemed very mainstream to me. more
navel-gazing, depresso characters, dysfunctional family blandness. OK, some
will love it--fine, just not for me.

Franzen's idea of being profund is to claim that he predicted the dot.com
bust. golly
