You know, just from the trailer, I knew I'd end up
hating BJM, and I was not disappointed in that regard.
I don't know, just seemed sort of ... arbitrary, made
up as they went along? Well, maybe not quite that bad
(unlike Dogma, the least funny comedy ever made, with
his new one not far behind, Kevin Smith oughtta get a
lifetime achievement award in that regard), but ...
But a whole bunch of not particularly amusing little
bits just strung together, is all. Half-floor,
hearing problem, tunnel behind filing cabinet, the
kicker for me was ending up on the New Jersey
Turnpike. Pretty lame. Like a bunch of kids sitting
around trying to do Monty Python's Flying Circus, but
without the detail-enhancing Oxbridge edumacations.
Even John Malkovich ...
The only part I laughed at was when Charlie Sheen came
in, which immediately raised the question, why not
Being Charlie Sheen? Now THAT would be interesting.
AND I simply can't stand Catherine Keener, ruins
everything she's in ...
On the other hand, Rushmore, now THERE'S a comedy.
And more recently, I liked Ghost World enough to see
it a couple of times. Cf. The World of Henry Orient
(and note poster next to Thora Birch's record player).
Then again, I really liked Legally Blonde as well, so
... hey, it's all about finding a context in which to
use specialized knowledge, okay? Favorite line: "I
object!" And I recommended Freddy Got Fingered to
people as the Cabin Boy of the twenty-first century,
so ...
In the meantime, saw Blue Velvet on the big screen
last night, The Tin Drum plus maybe the director's
newest one (The Legend of Rita) tonight or tomorrow.
Damn, I'm tired ...
