I heard recently (in one ear unfortunately for I was half-awake myself and
in need of that first cup o' joe) a fellow on NPR, plugging his book on the
History of Caffeine, discuss the elevation of the coffe bean past the
continual consumption of beer and fermented beverages, such as your "beer
soup", John, yeeeach, and THEN, how this led a much more amped-up and
time-conscious culture to believe in the need of a much more ubiquitous
presence of clocks and timepieces ...

... perhaps an NPR listener out there who heard the gent more clearly, or
may know more than I on the subject, or may even have this gent's book could
expound ...

... another book I may have to dig up for this is Terrence MacKenna's "Food
of the Gods" ... a good and thorough history of drug use, abuse, and
benefits, in the West, the East, and in shamanic cultures ... as you might
guess, it is usually the West that comes off as the exploiter of many
substances and/or their producers or users ...

love
