John asked the following about Blue Jays:
"Are they particularly common in North America? Do they fly like a
'screaming' 'squadron'?"
Yes, they are very common to the eastern US and up into southern
Canada, but are not seen beyond the Rockies to the west. Not that it
matters, but there are two western jays that are blue (the Scrub Jay
and Stellar's Jay) that are indeed blue. Stellar's Jay in particular
are similar to Blue Jays in demeanor, being loud and gregarious. I
have seen Blue Jays here in southeastern PA attack cats and mob hawks
(though American Crows are better at that). They may not gather in
"squadrons," but they do call to each other (probably family groups)
and can create a racket.
