Your reaction is irrational. Realizing that certain policies of the U.S.
government have fomented the hatred of the U.S. in the Middle East SHOULD be
part of the dialogue on how the U.S. will react. No on is justifying the
actions of these criminals. Your analogy to a rape victim is unfounded, since
the U.S.'s draconian policies in the Middle East have been perpetrated
unilaterally by the government without the consent of an informed American
public.
Has anyone pointeed out that Bin Laden is a monster that the U.S.
created? He and his forces were funded and trained by the U.S. government
during the Afghan war against the Soviet Union, in FULL KNOWLEDGE of his
insane and violent ideologies. In fact, he was chosen for the task BECAUSE of
this, becuase the U.S. knew he would have no problem violating human rights,
torturing prisoners, and murdering innocents in order t defeat the Soviets.
We MUST own up to this, because doing so is a crucial step to PREVENTING the
kinds of heinous violence we saw on our televisions yesterday. We must own up
to the past, because the past with regards to the U.S. policies in the Middle
East has been characterized by returning terror for terror. And, you know
what, IT HASN"T WORKED. We saw that yesterday.
There are leaders in this country who have acted WITHOUT the consent of
the American people, and they should be held responsible for their draconian
actions abroad, lest they be the ones who decide what our futures after
yesterday's attacks will be. We all have a responsibility to understanding
the facts about our relations with the Middle East and elsewhere, lest we give
our blind support to these leaders.
Believe me, I understand your rage. The question, however, we should all
be focusing on, is how to prevent this kind of mass murder and destruction
from ever happening again. Part of doing that is becoming informed about the
causes of this kind of insanity.
