well brett, this is what i think.. pynchon seems to have a little fancy
for underground communications, or in this case alternative
communications. did you read crying of lot 49? if you did, then think of
the post horn & alternative postal network thing. or if you read
vineland, i seem to remember some alternative form of communication in
that one too. and you could say the same for gravity's rainbow, what
with there being a possibly predictable means of knowing in wartime,
with psychic means, where the next v2 rocket would fall. i don't think
it's terribly important to totally figure out what the meaning, except
just to know that it's a signature theme, one that he's made his own,
and he's got a magical fantastical thing going on throughout M&D. i'm
not reading it right now but it's my favorite. a delight. one of those
men who always post to this list will possibly have a more complicated
answer if you want...
