Got my copy of PN 44-45 the other day and I've read a
couple of articles already -- highly recommended:
Terry Reilly's article, which reads P's Slow Learner
intro as a short story and as a response to _1984_;
and David Carr's article which reads GR in the light
of H.G. Wells.

Re this week's tragic events, Carr makes an intriguing
connection between P's Wellsian sources and the
introductory sequence og GR:

"[...] the 'glass somewhere far above that would let
the light of day through' (GR 3) is reminiscent of
London in _When the Sleeper Wakes_ (1899), a
futuristic capital city of towering buildings covered
by a giant glass dome; and the general atmosphere of
siege echoes the crisis scene of _The War in the Air_
(1908), in which is staged a terrifying air raid on
New York that initiates social collapse."
